Noon News 1.20.20: Shooting Investigation, Deadly Crash, Biden in Iowa and Celebrating MLK Day

Sioux City police are investigating a shooting after a man showed up at MercyOne with a gunshot wound late last night.  He told investigators someone shot him near Park Avenue and 29th Street.  That’s a couple of blocks away from Leif Erickson Park. The man who hasn’t been identified yet by authorities then drove himself to the hospital.

Two teenagers died after a collision between their vehicle and a semi in Sioux City. It happened around 9:30 last night at Lewis Boulevard and Third Street.  The semi was going north when it hit the car going east at the intersection.  The two teens died at the scene.  The driver of the truck wasn’t hurt.  Sioux City Police haven’t released the name of the victims or any more details about the crash.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden says President Donald Trump will lie about whoever gets his party’s nomination in 2020. While campaigning in central Iowa over the weekend, Biden says Trump has already been doing it to him for six months.

“None of the punches have landed. I’ve come out stronger. I’m in better shape. No one’s been attacked as often as I have. So, I feel good about where we are. But no matter who nominee is, you know Donald Trump is going to lie about.”

The Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, which centers on the president pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden begins tomorrow.

Biden’s rivals who serve in the Senate Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennett will all be balancing their campaign schedules with staying in Washington for the impeachment trial.

An event celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. takes place tonight in Sioux City.

“It’s just such an inviting spirit and attitude that we can include everyone, that is outside of our social circle, and just reach out to all races, all classes of people, to bring everyone together for one common goal, one common purpose.”

That’s Sandra Pearson who will be conducting the choir at the event.

The celebration is at seven at the First Congregational Church of Christ.
