Iowa Unemployment Rate Dips Slightly, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren Return to Siouxland

Iowa’s unemployment rate went up very slightly in July, but it is still one of the lowest in the nation. Iowa Workforce Development says the July rate was 2.5, and for the previous 12 months the rate was 2.4 percent. 

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will make return visits to Northwest Iowa communities on Tuesday.  Sanders will hold a "Storm Lake Breakfast with Bernie" event 10 a.m. Tuesday at Better Day Cafe, in Storm Lake. The event is free and open to the public.  At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sanders will attend an Arnolds Park ice cream social. The event will be held at The Waterfront Event Center - Arnolds Park.  At 5 p.m., Sanders will take part in the Frank LeMere Native American Forum at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City.

Tickets are required for the forum, in which candidates will face questions about their positions on Native American issues.  Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar are among the other presidential candidates who will be attending that forum Monday and Tuesday.

Fourth District Republican congressman Steve King will hold two town hall meetings in Northwest Iowa over the next week. The first event will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Storm Lake Middle School.  Tuesday, King will hold a Clay County town hall meeting at noon at the Outreach Center in Spencer.  King has pledged to hold town hall meetings in each of the 39 counties of the 4th congressional district.

Law officers across Iowa will start a two-week enforcement effort on the state’s highways today as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.  Law officers will concentrate on several key problem areas such as impaired driving and not being buckled up and texting and driving,”
