Gov. Kim Reynolds Signs Sales Tax Extension In Sioux CIty, Will Help Schools, 5;04

A statewide sales tax for school infrastructure improvements set to expire in 10 years has been extended through 2051.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill extending that sales tax into law in Sioux City today (yesterday/Friday).

Sioux City Community School District Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman (GAUS-min) says the state’s 1-cent sales tax has helped the school district in the past and will help them in the future.

((0524gausman   0:10)) We’ve got a couple of elementary facilities that have not been touched with this round of sales tax dollars. Those elementary schools will be able to be renovated or replaced with the extension.

Reynolds says the extension will also provide an estimated 5 billion dollars in additional property tax relief by 2051.

South Dakota farmers are having a poor planting season, with cold, wet weather adding to the struggles caused by low crop prices and President Donald Trump's tariffs, according to the Argus Leader.

About 19% of the state's corn has been planted, which is well under the three-quarters that are typically planted by this point in the season, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. Only 4% of soybeans have been planted, compared to the five-year average of 39% by this point.

Many are being forced to sell land or to leave the industry for other careers.

The Riverside Family Aquatic Center will not open for the season on Memorial Day weekend as it has in the past, due to a plaster replacement project that was delayed by weather.

According to a statement from the City of Sioux City, the cold and rainy spring made it difficult to complete the plaster replacement project in the anticipated time frame. The Parks and Recreation Department anticipates opening Riverside Pool on June 1.
