Blizzard Hits Northwest Iowa, Winter Storm for the Rest of the State

011720 504

The statewide winter storm today has been upgraded to a blizzard warning in northwest Iowa, while more snow accumulation has been forecast across the state.

Blizzard warning criteria from the NWS are wind gusts of 35 mph or greater and one-quarter of mile visibility or less that lasts up to three hours.

The state Department of Transportation’s 511 website shows the roads across much of Iowa’s southwestern half are completely snow-covered, with blizzard warnings posted for 18 northwest Iowa counties.  Visibility is down to a quarter-mile in some areas. Most of Iowa can expect three to six inches of snow by tomorrow.

U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Kristi Anderson tells Radio Iowa that carriers will make every effort to deliver the mail in virtually all weather conditions, but they need a hand from homeowners. Owners should make sure to shovel their sidewalks, their steps, their porch, and if they have a drive-up box, if they shovel around that at least six feet on each side.  Anderson says one side-effect of the winter weather is that some deliveries will be delayed.

The chairman of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe is urging South Dakota lawmakers to improve communication with Native American communities.

In the annual State of the Tribes address, Lester Thompson singled out bills passed last year that were aimed at protests of the Keystone XL pipeline. A divide between some tribal leaders and Republican Gov. Kristi Noem has been evident since last year.

Congressman Steve King announces that he will be hosting a town hall meeting in Woodbury County on Saturday, January 25th. The town hall meeting will be held in Sioux City from 2:00-3:00 PM. The event will be held on the 8th Floor of the Ho-Chunk Centre which is located at 600 4th Street.
